DESIGNING HOME OFFICE

Your home office is an important but often overlooked part of your house. Many people will stick it in a spare room or a corner of another room — or even claim the dining room table. But if you spend any time at all working from home, your home office needs to be a comfortable and functional space. What are the essentials for a good home office? Let's take a closer look.

The space
First, what do you have to work with? Do you have a dedicated den or an extra bedroom that you could use to house your entire home office? Or maybe there's a great space in the basement that would work for your needs. In other homes, there may only be a small corner somewhere that would be suitable. Start with deciding on your space, and then you can plan around it.

The desk
How big do you need your desk to be? Maybe you work exclusively from a laptop so all you need is a small writing desk to work from or on. But you might have a larger tower computer and multiple monitors, so you'll have to find a larger desk to accommodate those. And don't forget to pay attention to the aesthetics of your desk. If you'll be working at your home office every day, you want to enjoy your space.

Storage
You also should consider storage. Do you have a lot of books that need to be on bookshelves? Do you have files that need to be in a filing cabinet? Do you need space for a printer or other office equipment? The storage you choose for your home office should accommodate everything you need without becoming cluttered.

Other equipment
Speaking of other equipment, what essentials are necessary for a complete home office beyond your computer? If you have the space — and the need — you might consider the following:

  • Printer.
  • Scanner.
  • High-speed internet access.
  • Task lighting.
  • Telephone.
  • Shredder.
  • Surge protector.

Your needs will be directly influenced by the type of work you do.

Your chair
Last, you need to consider your chair. Ergonomics is the science of body comfort and your chair needs to be supportive and comfortable for you to work for extended periods of time. Make sure your chair is the correct height, allows you to keep your back straight and offers lumbar support.
